What is dyslexia remediation?
At Big River Psychology, we utilize the Barton method of dyslexia remediation.
The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a one-on-one tutoring program designed to help individuals with dyslexia improve their reading and spelling skills. It is structured to teach children to read and spell at a mid-ninth-grade level. Rather than homework help and academic accommodations, dyslexia remediation programs aim to advance the child’s reading and spelling skills through a structured, research-based approach. The Barton System uses a multisensory approach as a bridge for kids that connects sounds with words, which means it involves two senses: hearing and seeing. With the inclusion of the Orton-Gillingham method, children receive significant support in understanding the concepts and curriculum while reading. Different levels go up to Level 10, but the child can learn one at a time. It might be a vast and lengthy method, but as the user rises to levels, different concepts are introduced to help the student learn better and faster. The Barton method is aimed at improving your child’s reading skills up to a 9th-grade level.

Is my child ready?
Most children with dyslexia qualify for the Barton System. Children should:
• Be age 7 or older
• Have an IQ of 70+
• Be able to hold a conversation at a 2nd-grade level or above
• Children do not need to have a formal diagnosis of Dyslexia, though it should be suspected
What is the time committment?
Our program requires a minimum of 2 sessions per week

Our dyslexia remediation educators sign up for certain evening shifts per week. As such, your child’s dyslexia educator may not be the same educator every session. All of our educators follow the same training program and can resume whatever Barton level your child is working through.
Students will have the option to attend a higher frequency of sessions during the summer months. Daytime sessions will be available in the summer
Parents are encouraged to stay on site, since you’ll learn strategies to support at home.
Most children complete all 10 levels in 1- 2 years, but progress depends on the child’s learning pace, parent involvement, and frequency of sessions.
How much does it cost?
$70 per session
