Psychological Services

Neuropsychological Testing

Neuropsychological and psychological testing is an evaluation by a licensed psychologist that helps patients and/or families understand the relationship between brain functions, emotions, and behaviors. These types of testing can assist in the diagnosis, symptom monitoring, and treatment of neurological, medical, and psychiatric conditions.

A psychologist will use a variety of assessment sources to answer the referral question/s, including review of previous testing data, patient interviews, interviews with parents/providers, self-report questionnaires as well as various standardized psychological tests that assess a wide range of domains. A combination of neuropsychological tests and psychological tests can assess domains such as intelligence, memory, executive functioning, learning delays, language, visual motor integration, developmental delays, emotional functioning, and personality traits.

Neurodevelopmental Testing/Autism Evaluation

A neurodevelopmental evaluation may be beneficial in assessing for signs of Autism Spectrum Disorder or if a young child is not meeting specific developmental benchmarks. Many healthcare providers may cite the term “ADOS” testing, which is often included in this type of evaluation, although other measures may be used to assess for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Additional diagnostic rule-outs may include an intellectual delay and/or environmental factors that could be impacting a child’s development.

Psychiatric Services

Dr.  Zaluski is a board-certified child psychiatrist and offers comprensive psychiatric diagnostic evaluations and medication management.  As a child psychiatrist, Dr. Zaluski is qualified to diagnose a variety of childhood mental health conditions, including ADHD, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma related disorders, and autism.  Components of the evaluation include gathering history, speaking with parents/ guardians, reviewing records from other clinicians, obtaining data from standardized measures, and meeting with the child for a thorough mental status exam.  Sometimes the evaluation process may take multiple sessions.

After the evaluation is complete, the doctor will discuss a treatment plan.  If medication is a part of the plan, then Dr. Zaluski will initiate and manage the medication regimen.

For many patients, once the medication regimen is stable, Dr. Zaluski will discuss transfer back to primary care.  This process allows Dr. Zaluski to evaluate and treat more patients across Montana.

Dyslexia Remediation Services

Our Center for Dyslexia Remediation is run by Dr. Nixon, and services are provided by a team of local teachers who have undergone additional training in the Barton Method.

What is the Barton Method for Dyslexia Remediation?

The Barton Reading & Spelling System is a one-on-one tutoring program designed to help individuals with dyslexia improve their reading and spelling skills. It is structured to teach children to read and spell at a mid-ninth-grade level. Rather than homework help and academic accommodations, dyslexia remediation programs aim to advance the child’s reading and spelling skills through a structured, research-based approach. The Barton System uses a multisensory approach as a bridge for kids that connects sounds with words, which means it involves two senses: hearing and seeing. With the inclusion of the Orton-Gillingham method, children receive significant support in understanding the concepts and curriculum while reading. Different levels go up to Level 10, but the child can learn one at a time. It might be a vast and lengthy method, but as the user rises to levels, different concepts are introduced to help the student learn better and faster. The Barton method is aimed at improving your child’s reading skills up to a 9th-grade level.
